Why the name “Hillside” Baptist Church?

Hillside was formed in February 1974 as the result of the amalgamation of three rural churches located on the outskirts of Northwest Moncton. With the rapid commercial and residential growth of this section of Moncton, the Gorge, Hildegarde and Lutes Mountain churches joined together under the name “Hillside”. The name depicts not only our church’s setting (on a hill), but also our hope-filled vision to be “like a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see”.

What is Hillside’s mission?

Hillside exists “to honour God by leading people to become fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ”.
We seek to carry out our mission through our 3 C’s strategy (celebrate, connect, contribute). People are encouraged to celebrate (attend Sunday services), connect (via small groups and age-related ministries) and then contribute (serving and supporting God’s work). (Top of Page)

To what denomination does Hillside belong?

Hillside Baptist Church belongs regionally to the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches (CABC) and nationally we are affiliated with Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM). Although our roots are Baptist, Hillside is a church that welcomes the unchurched as well as those from a wide variety of religious and denominational backgrounds. We also gladly serve together with other like-minded churches who, like us, are seeking to present Christianity in a relevant way so that the unconnected will get connected to God through a vital relationship with Jesus Christ.

I’m new. Will I feel out of place?

We try very hard to make Hillside a safe place to investigate God. Sunday services are designed to make newcomers feel comfortable, so whether you’re investigating Christianity, new to Hillside, or returning to church after an absence, you’ll feel welcome here. The truth is that we gladly welcome new people which is one of the reasons why Hillside is a growing church. Newcomers regularly comment on the warmth and genuine friendliness of our people. Can I bring my kids to church on Sunday?

By all means! Hillside is an enthusiastically child-friendly church! We have an attractive nursery with a caring staff for children under 3 years and fun, bible-based learning environments for children age 3 to Grade 5. The 3 and 4 year olds attend a preschool program during each of our two morning services while “Kingdom Kids” (K-Grade 5) is offered during our 9:15 service and “Kid Konnection” (K-Grade 5) during our 11:00 service. Hillside is a growing and busy church, so how do I fit in?

If you’re new to Hillside, you’re not alone! Chances are, there are persons sitting near you who may also be new. We encourage newcomers to visit our Welcome Center in the main lobby where one of our hosts will gladly answer your questions. There you will also be given our “Welcome to Hillside” packet of information along with our infamous Hillside gift mug. We also encourage new people to attend one of our “Discover Hillside” Newcomers classes. This one hour class is designed to be an orientation session for newcomers so that they can figure out how to get plugged in. (Top of Page)

Is there anyone my age?

Yes, Hillside is a multi-generational church which reflects the Greater Moncton area. You’ll find people of all ages here, with a high percentage in the 25-55 age group. We offer programs, recreational events, home groups, serving opportunities and seminars for many targeted groups including young adults, couples, men, women and seniors. (Top of Page)

What are home teams?

Hillside has a growing number of home teams or home-based bible study groups. These groups meet either weekly or bi-weekly on different nights of the week. The purpose of these teams is to provide an opportunity for groups of 8-12 individuals to growth together through spiritual encouragement, bible study, friendship building, worship and prayer. Home teams is one of Hillside’s primary “get connected” strategies. (Top of Page)

Why does Hillside have so many staff?

The growing size of our church enables us to offer a variety of quality programs. We have a combination of full-time and part-time staff who specilialize in specific areas to better serve the needs of our church and outside community. In addition to our senior pastor, we have staff for worship arts, children, youth, adults, seniors and support services (administration, bookkeeping and custodial). (Top of Page)

How is the church governed and led?

Hillside has an annual congregational meeting each year (usually in January) at which time officers are appointed and our annual budget is adopted by the members. We have a congregational form of government that empowers the staff (under the leadership of the Senior Pastor) and gifted ministry teams to carry out the day-to-day operations of the ministry. The administrative side of the church is overseen by our Board of Management while the Board of Deacons function primarily as discerners and shepherds to ensure that we are effectively carrying out Christ’s mission.
